What is myofascial pain?

Myofascial pain is a chronic condition that causes pain and tenderness in the muscles and connective tissues of the face, jaw, neck, and shoulders. Often associated with TMJ disorders or bruxism (teeth grinding), it can result in jaw stiffness, headaches, facial discomfort, and trigger point sensitivity that doesn’t go away on its own.

At Legacy Smiles of Southern Arizona, we identify the root causes of myofascial pain and deliver customized treatment solutions that relieve discomfort and restore normal function. With our Green Valley oral myofunctional therapy, we’re here to help you feel better, faster.

Symptoms of myofascial pain

sedation dentistry treatments at legacy smiles of southern arizona
Myofascial pain is often underdiagnosed, especially because its symptoms overlap with other dental or medical conditions. Common signs include:
  • Persistent jaw, face, or neck pain
  • Painful trigger points in the muscles (especially in the jaw or temple)
  • Limited jaw movement or a "locked" feeling
  • Facial soreness, especially after waking
  • Headaches or earaches not linked to other causes
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw joint

This is how we help

  1. In-depth evaluation: We begin with a detailed consultation, digital imaging (such as CBCT), and a muscle/joint assessment to identify trigger points and underlying causes.
  2. Customized treatment plan: We’ll tailor your plan based on your symptoms and diagnosis.
  3. Ongoing monitoring: We’ll track your progress, make adjustments as needed, and offer continued support to help you stay pain-free.

Myofascial pain FAQs

Is myofascial pain the same as TMJ disorder?

K
L

They’re closely related, but not exactly the same. TMJ disorder refers to joint dysfunction, while Green Valley myofascial pain focuses on muscle and connective tissue pain. Many patients experience both together.

How is myofascial pain diagnosed?

K
L

We use clinical exams, digital imaging, and a review of your symptoms to pinpoint myofascial trigger points and rule out other causes of discomfort.

How long does it take to feel better?

K
L

Some patients feel relief within days, especially with oral appliance therapy. Long-term success often involves ongoing support and self-care strategies.

Will I need surgery?

K
L
Almost never. Myofascial pain is best managed with conservative, non-invasive treatments. Surgery is extremely rare and only recommended if structural issues persist after other therapies.
